Professors Josh Krieger and Jim Matheson teach a course called Tough Tech Ventures at Harvard Business School. It's intended for students interested in founding, joining, or investing in tough tech. Back in 2023, Josh contacted me with the idea of writing a case study to illustrate the use and value of techno-economic modeling in bringing new technologies to market.

I loved the idea (of course), so we set to work. I suggested we base it on one of BTE's former clients, DMC Biotechnologies. DMC was on board with techno-economic modeling even before I showed up, and their co-founder, former CEO, and board member, Matt Lipscomb was glad to help. To accompany the case study and allow students to follow along, we built a simplified but fully featured version of a model used by DMC.

For me, the best part has been getting to sit in on Josh and Jim presenting it to the class - fluidly (and somewhat magically) guiding the conversation from one key point to another.
